What’s your favourite book or author and why?

This is a very hard question, but I probably have to go with ‘Emma’ (or ‘Persuasion’? Agh!) by Jane Austen. I was named after Jane Austen (and my second name is Emma), so I feel like her books have been lifelong companions. I love the careful attention Austen pays to her characters and their lives, and the wonderfully detailed, funny and compassionate way she writes. I find I really have to slow down when I read her, and I appreciate that. We also named our daughter Emma!

What makes for a good story or book?

I love novels that explore big ideas and ask interesting questions. I also love books that look close up at the way we live our lives as humans, that observe our interactions and inner workings.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

‘Now, Where Did I Put My Glasses?’

Do you have any reading rituals?

During lockdown, I’ve been trying to make sure I differentiate between weekdays and weekends. So my weekend morning treat – one I’m pretty strict about! – is to make a pot of tea, go outside to a square of sun, sit in my favourite chair and read for a bit. Bliss.

What are you reading at the moment?

‘Bring Up the Bodies’ by Hilary Mantel (the second in the ‘Wolf Hall’ series about Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII). I love it – you get so drawn into the world.

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

The first time I read THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY by Douglas Adams I must have been around 10. I was sick in bed, with an awful cold and recall being fussed over. I remember not wanting to laugh too loudly in case I was caught having too good a time and promptly returned to school. Now, whenever I revisit the Hitchhiker’s series, it feels like a warm hug, consoling me as the world unleashes its latest absurd offering.

What makes for a good story or book?

I want to be hooked in by the author’s style and drawn into a completely different perspective on life. A surprising observation on every page helps keep my easily distracted brain on task. Catharsis and resolution optional.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Feathered Thing

Do you have any reading rituals?

I don’t have rituals as such, but my lovely husband brings me cups of tea while I’m reading. I’ll take a few sips, then forget all about it. When it’s undrinkably cold, I heat it up in the microwave and repeat the whole process until it’s pure radiation in a mug.

What are you reading at the moment?

THE SATURDAY PORTRAITS by Maxine Beneba Clarke and ENTANGLED LIFE by Merlin Sheldrake.

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

My favourite book is 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It’s a masterpiece of magic realism. Every time I read it,  I’m stuck by a different element in the book. My favourite author at the moment is Ruth Ware. Her thrillers make for compulsive reading.

What makes for a good story or book?

A book that has you bargaining for one more page.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Is this middle child syndrome?

Do you have any reading rituals?

Not really, I just love being rugged up in bed with a book.

What are you reading at the moment?

WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING by Alyssa Cole

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

“Meet me at Lennon’s” by Melanie Myers. This is striking historical fiction set in my hometown Brisbane during wartime 1940 and in the present. Melanie is one of my besties from drama school and theatre studies, so she’s fabulous at integrating dialogue in her writing and interweaves narratives brilliantly. A poignant page turner that has been a big hit on the book-club lists in Brissie – Melanie even wrote a series of specific book club questions and discussion points for the novel on her website!

What makes for a good story or book?

I am endlessly fascinated by discovering nuances of character and the surprise of good storytelling. And exquisite words! So… a great yarn with interesting events and relationships and powerful and poetic imagery can captivate me for hours.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Cats Vs The Stage – one woman’s struggle to choose between the great loves of her life.

Do you have any reading rituals?

Both my cats, Sergio and Dante, on my lap. They make excellent book-rests and leg warmers… and they warm my heart when I’m crying over a sad story.

What are you reading at the moment?

All the books that are mentioned in KILLING KATIE – CAT’S EYE by Margaret Atwood, JANE EYRE by Charlotte Brontë, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN by Lionel Shriver. A stack of exciting and quality novels!
