Alan Ayckbourn’s award-winning trilogy THE NORMAN CONQUESTS is a comic masterpiece of three parallel plays, each tracing the unravelling of Norman and his flailing romantic ambitions from a slightly different, and often simultaneous, perspective. Once you’ve taken a look at what’s happening in the living room in LIVING TOGETHER, have a peek at the action in the garden in ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN and from around the table in TABLE MANNERS. A man with his back to the camera lifts a saucepan while facing a surprised woman in a yellow dress, standing near a sofa covered in patterned blankets in a dimly lit room. Three people stand in front of a sofa, each drinking from a glass. A woman in a cardigan and patterned shirt is on the left, a man in glasses and a tucked-in shirt in the centre, and another man in a beanie and coat on the right. A woman with curly hair stands with arms crossed and a concerned expression, while a bearded man in a beanie and casual clothes reclines on a striped sofa in a cosy, cluttered living room set on stage. A warmly lit stage set depicts a cosy living room with a sofa, armchairs, bookshelves, lamps, and rugs. The text The Norman Conquests is displayed in the upper left corner against a dark background. Three adults sit on a sofa, laughing and interacting while playing a board game on a coffee table in front of them. They appear relaxed and joyful, surrounded by cosy lamps and cushions. A bearded man in a winter hat speaks on a beige rotary phone, gesturing with his hand, while three other men sit nearby, two with heads lowered, all in a dimly lit room with a dark background. Four adults sit around a table playing a board game. One woman looks concerned, another listens intently, while a man in a striped tie leans forward, speaking passionately. A bookcase is in the background. Two men are having a serious conversation in a dimly lit room. One man faces away from the camera, while the other, wearing glasses and a tucked-in shirt, looks at him with a concerned expression. A bearded man wearing a knitted hat sits on the floor, holding a wine bottle in one hand and a glass in the other, with his mouth open as if shouting or singing. Shoes and a furry rug are nearby. A woman with blonde hair angrily points her finger at a bearded man in a knitted hat sitting with arms crossed on a striped sofa; a lamp and blankets are in the background. A woman and a bearded man sit on a striped sofa in conversation; the woman wears a dress and holds a blanket, while the man gestures expressively, wearing a knitted hat and trench coat. A bearded man wearing a knitted hat and casual clothes lounges on a chair, resting his head on one hand. An old, weathered suitcase sits on his lap, and a textured blanket covers the armrest. The background is dark.

A woman stands in a garden setting, looking down with concern at a man lying on the grass. The man is wearing a patterned shirt and hat, whilst flowers and a bench surround them on stage. Two men sit on a garden bench surrounded by plants; one wears a knitted hat and holds a bottle, the other, in a pink apron and dress shoes, holds a glass and newspaper. They appear to be having an animated conversation. A man and a woman sit on wooden deckchairs on a grassy stage, surrounded by flowers. The woman smiles at the man whilst they talk, creating a relaxed outdoor scene. Two people sit on a bench in a lush, flower-filled garden under stage lighting. The scene is vibrant with various colourful flowers and greenery, and the pair appear to be engaged in a conversation. A stage set designed as a garden with green grass, colourful flowers, a white metal bench at the centre, and stepping stones leading towards it, all surrounded by darkness. A man in a beanie and beige coat smiles playfully at a woman holding a bouquet of white and pink flowers. The background is dark, highlighting the two figures. A woman in a mauve jumpsuit sits smiling on a deckchair in a garden setting, surrounded by green grass and flowers. A man in glasses holds a coiled rope and stands on a grassy stage, smiling. Behind him, a woman sits on a white bench, looking off to the side. Flowers and greenery are scattered across the stage. Two men sit on metal chairs in a garden setting. One wears a beanie, brown jacket, and corduroy trousers; the other wears a flat cap, checked blazer, blue trousers, and tie. Flowers and greenery fill the foreground. A woman with short blonde hair sits sideways on a decorative metal bench. She wears a cream jumper, a light scarf around her neck, and a brown patterned skirt, looking off to the side with a thoughtful expression.

Hello again!

It’s been a few weeks since my last diary entry and in that time we have managed to bump in, tech and preview all three plays of THE NORMAN CONQUESTS. We rolled the shows out over three weeks, previewing them for the first time on three consecutive Fridays. TABLE MANNERS was the first so that has had the most runs in front of an audience so far, followed by LIVING TOGETHER and then ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN, which at this stage has had only two shows.

It’s an incredibly satisfying feeling having all the plays in full swing in the lead up to our opening night(s). Audience responses have been very warm, so much so that we are reminding ourselves on a daily basis that the world we are creating is that of a drama, NOT a comedy. When laughs start to come from the audience, it’s extremely tempting for an actor to play up to them, in the hopes of milking a moment for all it’s worth. But THE NORMAN CONQUESTS don’t work like that. If the actors play for laughs, the laughs will inevitably disappear. It’s an interesting paradox that you’ll have to come see for yourself.

Everyone in the cast and crew is very happy to have their days back with the shows running in the evenings. The Ensemble took extremely good care of us over the longest tech I’ve ever experienced. It’s been a huge team effort to get to this point and we were helped along by a lot good humour, plenty of company dinners and a fair bit of refined sugar. Tomorrow is our first official opening with TABLE MANNERS up first, followed by our first three-show day on the weekend. Can’t wait!

Two women in vintage clothing are in a dining room. One stands, pointing sternly, whilst the other sits at the table looking upset, clutching a serviette. The table is laid with flowers, glassware, and empty plates. A man with glasses and a moustache, wearing a light blue short-sleeve button-up shirt and beige trousers, stands and smiles next to a table with a small bouquet of flowers. The background is dark.

Before you see THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, take a look at this quick guide for all the info you need to know about this award-winning trilogy.

What is THE NORMAN CONQUESTS?

THE NORMAN CONQUESTS is a trilogy of plays that follow the same story set over one weekend in an English country house. Each self-contained play tells the story from a different room in the house – the living room in LIVING TOGETHER, the garden in ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN and the dining table in TABLE MANNERS.

Who wrote it?

Written in 1973 by the prolific playwright Alan Ayckbourn, THE NORMAN CONQUESTS is one (or three) of his most produced plays. He is one of Britain’s most popular playwrights with an unmistakable sense of witty comedy that is instantly identified. Read about Alan Ayckbourn and THE NORMAN CONQUESTS here.

What are the shows about?

THE NORMAN CONQUESTS follows one very dysfunctional family in a pursuit to get along and make it through the weekend intact in an English country house. An uncovered rendezvous, lies and family tension fuel the unravelling of this deteriorating family as Norman attempts to make everyone happy in his own Norman-y way (whilst making himself happy of course). Read the synopsis here.

Why are people laughing at a waste paper basket. What’s so funny?!

This is where the genius of Alan Ayckbourn’s writing truly comes into play. The story of this dreadful weekend is told and re-told with increasing nuance and humour as the pieces of the puzzle cleverly come together with conversations and antics reported on in one play appearing on stage in another! See them all and you’ll find out what happened in the garden with Norman’s pyjamas, why Norman was singing the song in the living room and just why Sarah is smiling so damn much!

Meet the family

  • Norman – assistant librarian and self-confessed master of seduction
  • Annie – frustrated with life, tired and sister of Reg and Ruth
  • Reg – well-meaning, perpetually hungry and enjoys making board games
  • Sarah – the uptight and controlling wife of Reg
  • Ruth – no-nonsense, workaholic  and married to Norman
  • Tom – the well-meaning but utterly hopeless vet

Are there still tickets available?

Yes! Tickets are selling fast, but there are still great seats to all shows! Check out the best available on each individual show page, TABLE MANNERS, LIVING TOGETHER or ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN.

For more info on the show, click here. At Ensemble Theatre 19 Oct – 12 Jan.

THE NORMAN CONQUESTS are about relationships and the fraught, funny, sad, sometimes preposterous way husbands and wives act and react with each other. The trilogy looks at a desperate weekend in which the family is thrown together. Even though the plays were written in 1973 and set in Britain, their universal and timeless themes are still very much relevant to today. We are still trying to work out who we are in relation to gender, family, love, sex and belonging. The characters’ interaction is funny because we recognise ourselves. Society may have changed the way it reacts to certain gender politics but the rift between partners and the desperation of trying to make things work within a family is still exactly the same. Each play stands alone and you get a full story with no compromise in writing or plot. Alan Ayckbourn’s brilliance is in his clever plotting within each play and if you see all three you will see why I use the word genius when describing the trilogy. It is breathtaking, simple storytelling that happens to be extremely entertaining. The plays are wonderful when seen individually but really pay off when seen all together, in any order. You hear people laugh at a moment in the living room because they saw the moment before, with different detail, in the dining room. It’s extraordinarily clever. And I’m thrilled to be staging such a remarkable feat of writing particularly with this incredible cast.

While I’m sitting in my backyard enjoying a Monday off, the crew are at the theatre “bumping in” in preparation for our first paying audience on Friday night. Last week we actioned Mark’s plan to run two plays per day before finishing the week with a “company run” of each show. By the end of the week, Brian proudly announced that we’d done ten shows already. (We took Wednesday morning off to do a fix up, but made up for it on Saturday, for anyone keeping score).

Company runs are done in the rehearsal room and are a chance for any staff member at the theatre to come and watch what we’ve been doing. They’re a great way for actors to ease into performing in front of an audience – no matter how many times you do it, showing people something new is always a bit nerve-wracking – and they’re also good for giving people behind the scenes a greater sense of the show we are selling. Everybody was very supportive with their feedback and we finished the week on a mild and exhausted high.

A company run is also, usually, a good indication for how audiences are going to react in the moment – i.e. where there might be a laugh or a gasp or whatnot – but THE NORMAN CONQUESTS is a little bit different in this regard. Audience members will be having slightly different experiences depending on how many shows they see and what order they see them in. Matilda, who plays Annie, saw the shows on Broadway and said there tended to be pockets of people all over the theatre, having similar reactions. These people had obviously seen one or both of the other shows and were witnessing some kind of payoff, whereas other audience members were yet to see the other plays so weren’t yet privy to the entire situation. As actors, this means we’re going to get vastly different audience reactions from night to night. Even the company runs gave us a taste of this, which made me thankful for the natural approach we have taken with the text. When you don’t know how the audience is going to react, the best thing to do is to lock in with the other actors on stage and what the situation is. Our focus during rehearsal (we have been corpsing the entire time) makes this easier to achieve.

Everyone at Ensemble is very excited to finally be moving these shows into the theatre. The next few weeks are bound to be a bit crazy while we tech, dress run and preview three shows but the preparation on all fronts has been exceptional and it feels like we’re ready for the last piece of the puzzle to start coming in and taking their seats.

The cast of THE NORMAN CONQUESTS is having an absolute ball in rehearsals! Take a peek inside the side-splittingly hilarious rehearsal room and see for yourself.

Photography by Prudence Upton.

A man with a beard wearing a navy knitted hat and dark shirt is lying on his side on a carpeted floor with his eyes closed, appearing to be asleep or unconscious. A man in a beige coat and blue winter hat with a red bobble stands indoors, holding his hands to his chin and looking thoughtful. Coat hangers and a sign that says Garden are visible in the background. Three women sit indoors; one at the front uses a laptop, another in glasses looks down, and a third in a pink shirt leans forward, gazing attentively to the side. A middle-aged man with short hair sits on a blue checked sofa, smiling and holding a piece of paper. A box and a game board are on the wooden coffee table in front of him, and a lamp is in the background. A woman with blonde hair stands next to a sign that says Bedrooms Rest of house, holding a light blue textured blanket and looking to the side with a thoughtful expression. A man with glasses and a blue patterned shirt stands in front of a wall with several colourful photos of gardens, rooms, and groups of people pinned on it. He appears to be talking or presenting. A woman with short blonde hair sits on a blue checked sofa, looking to the side while holding an open red box on her lap. There is a table with a lamp and a cushion in the background. A woman in a pink blouse and a man in a grey blazer sit close together on a blue chequered sofa, smiling warmly and looking into each other's eyes, creating a friendly and intimate atmosphere. Three women stand indoors; one in focus at centre wearing a black jumper, looking forward, while the two others, in casual and business attire, are blurred in the background beside a blue checked sofa. Four adults are in a room; one man at the front puts on a jacket and wears a beanie, while a woman laughs, another man sits on a sofa, and a woman at the back talks on the phone. The setting looks like a casual rehearsal or meeting. A woman with curly hair sits on a bench by a table with a lamp, wearing a jumper and looking pensive with her hand covering her mouth. A woman with long, wavy, light brown and pink hair is sitting on a sofa, using a silver MacBook laptop. She is wearing a white shirt and a black hoodie. A blurred person is in the foreground. Three people sit on a blue checked sofa holding mugs, looking serious. A fourth person sits in the background, also looking thoughtful. The scene suggests a tense or contemplative moment. A woman sits with her hand covering her face, looking distressed, whilst a man kneels nearby, gazing at her with concern. They are indoors, next to an orange chair and a table with a box on it. A woman with wavy, tousled blonde hair and a pensive expression sits indoors, wearing a sleeveless black top. The background is blurred, showing indistinct people and furniture. Three people sit at a cluttered desk, laughing and smiling. The group includes two women and one man, surrounded by papers, cups, and water bottles in a brightly lit room with shelves and office supplies. A man in a blue jacket stands in the foreground, while a woman holding a blue shirt stands behind him. Both have serious expressions and are indoors with a blurred background. Four sheets of paper display fashion sketches of women wearing vintage-style outfits in light colours, with some designs outlined in pencil and partially coloured with blue, brown, or beige watercolour. A beige rotary-style landline telephone sits on a dark surface next to a wooden organiser holding letters, envelopes, and a pair of scissors. An ashtray is also visible on the right side of the image. A woman with straight brown hair wearing a mauve button-up shirt stands against a plain grey background, looking at the camera with a neutral expression. A group of people in a casual, creative workspace. Some are sitting and chatting, one woman is laughing on an armchair, and another stands smiling in the foreground. Various work materials and computers are visible in the background. A man and woman lie on a rug, laughing and embracing each other. The scene appears indoors, with retro furniture, cushions, and a blue sofa in the background, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere. She stands indoors against a white wall with various drawings and photos displayed behind her.
