What’s your favourite book or author and why?

This is a very hard question, but I probably have to go with ‘Emma’ (or ‘Persuasion’? Agh!) by Jane Austen. I was named after Jane Austen (and my second name is Emma), so I feel like her books have been lifelong companions. I love the careful attention Austen pays to her characters and their lives, and the wonderfully detailed, funny and compassionate way she writes. I find I really have to slow down when I read her, and I appreciate that. We also named our daughter Emma!

What makes for a good story or book?

I love novels that explore big ideas and ask interesting questions. I also love books that look close up at the way we live our lives as humans, that observe our interactions and inner workings.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

‘Now, Where Did I Put My Glasses?’

Do you have any reading rituals?

During lockdown, I’ve been trying to make sure I differentiate between weekdays and weekends. So my weekend morning treat – one I’m pretty strict about! – is to make a pot of tea, go outside to a square of sun, sit in my favourite chair and read for a bit. Bliss.

What are you reading at the moment?

‘Bring Up the Bodies’ by Hilary Mantel (the second in the ‘Wolf Hall’ series about Thomas Cromwell and Henry VIII). I love it – you get so drawn into the world.

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

The first time I read THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY by Douglas Adams I must have been around 10. I was sick in bed, with an awful cold and recall being fussed over. I remember not wanting to laugh too loudly in case I was caught having too good a time and promptly returned to school. Now, whenever I revisit the Hitchhiker’s series, it feels like a warm hug, consoling me as the world unleashes its latest absurd offering.

What makes for a good story or book?

I want to be hooked in by the author’s style and drawn into a completely different perspective on life. A surprising observation on every page helps keep my easily distracted brain on task. Catharsis and resolution optional.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Feathered Thing

Do you have any reading rituals?

I don’t have rituals as such, but my lovely husband brings me cups of tea while I’m reading. I’ll take a few sips, then forget all about it. When it’s undrinkably cold, I heat it up in the microwave and repeat the whole process until it’s pure radiation in a mug.

What are you reading at the moment?

THE SATURDAY PORTRAITS by Maxine Beneba Clarke and ENTANGLED LIFE by Merlin Sheldrake.

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

My favourite book is 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It’s a masterpiece of magic realism. Every time I read it,  I’m stuck by a different element in the book. My favourite author at the moment is Ruth Ware. Her thrillers make for compulsive reading.

What makes for a good story or book?

A book that has you bargaining for one more page.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Is this middle child syndrome?

Do you have any reading rituals?

Not really, I just love being rugged up in bed with a book.

What are you reading at the moment?

WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING by Alyssa Cole

What’s your favourite book or author and why?

“Meet me at Lennon’s” by Melanie Myers. This is striking historical fiction set in my hometown Brisbane during wartime 1940 and in the present. Melanie is one of my besties from drama school and theatre studies, so she’s fabulous at integrating dialogue in her writing and interweaves narratives brilliantly. A poignant page turner that has been a big hit on the book-club lists in Brissie – Melanie even wrote a series of specific book club questions and discussion points for the novel on her website!

What makes for a good story or book?

I am endlessly fascinated by discovering nuances of character and the surprise of good storytelling. And exquisite words! So… a great yarn with interesting events and relationships and powerful and poetic imagery can captivate me for hours.

If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Cats Vs The Stage – one woman’s struggle to choose between the great loves of her life.

Do you have any reading rituals?

Both my cats, Sergio and Dante, on my lap. They make excellent book-rests and leg warmers… and they warm my heart when I’m crying over a sad story.

What are you reading at the moment?

All the books that are mentioned in KILLING KATIE – CAT’S EYE by Margaret Atwood, JANE EYRE by Charlotte Brontë, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN by Lionel Shriver. A stack of exciting and quality novels!

With THE WOMAN IN BLACK taking a small hiatus from the stage due to current restrictions, we’re taking a moment to look back at one of Ensemble’s favourite faces, Jamie Oxenbould.

From comedies to dramas, Jamie is a writer and performer who has wowed audiences over the years in countless productions with his impeccable comic timing and compelling characters. Let’s get started and dive into the archives!

BABY DOLL (2019)

Jamie played down-on-his-luck Archie Lee in Tennessee Williams’ Deep South tale of lust, jealousy and betrayal.

“Director Shaun Rennie draws out finely detailed performances.. tense and steamy” Stage Whispers

A bearded man wearing a light shirt and brown trousers sits on wooden steps, looking thoughtful. The background is dark with some plants visible in the foreground. A man and a woman sit closely on wooden steps, with the woman reclining on a suitcase and smiling as the man leans over her affectionately. The setting appears rustic, with tall grass and soft lighting.

Photography: Prudence Upton

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH (2013)

In this sharp and biting social comedy from the ingenious Alan Ayckbourn, Jamie played Gareth, the overly keen neighbour with a penchant for historically accurate reconstructions of medieval forms of punishment.

“His exasperation is hilarious as he demonstrates, to a meeting of bemused neighbours, the difference between stocks and pillory” Stage Noise

Photography: Natalie Boog

THE SPEAR CARRIER (2012)

Written and performed by Jamie Oxenbould and joined on stage by Jessica Sullivan, this comedy directed by Mark Kilmurry portrayed the innerworkings, annoyances and anxieties of an actor searching for their big break with hilarity and gusto.

“A wonderful telling of the story of a small man in a small part in a medium size production of a very big play” ArtsHub

A man in a red Renaissance-style costume and holding a spear stands in a wooden doorway with a painted stone arch frame, performing on a stage with a wooden floor. A person in an elaborate red Renaissance-style costume with a feathered hat sits on a bench, posing confidently in front of matching red curtains.

WHEN DAD MARRIED FURY (2012)

In this scintillating David Williamson comedy examining the political and religious divides of contemporary Australia, Jamie played Ben, a son on the hunt for his fair share of the family fortune.

“As Alan’s sons Ben and Ian, who want and expect a slice of the pie, Jamie Oxenbould and Warren Jones are excellent .We see the interfamily scheming, wheeling and dealing, the hidden jealousies.” ArtsHub

A man in a brown blazer and tan trousers stands with a drink in one hand, gesturing with the other, in a room covered with colourful banknotes. Six adults stand together on a brightly lit stage, looking at a tablet held by a man in the centre. Some are smiling or laughing, and they appear to be sharing a light-hearted moment. The background is colourful and patterned.

CASANOVA (2011)

Directed and adapted by Mark Kilmurry,  Jamie played Casanova’s arch enemy Grimani in this enchanting play.

“A spellbinding, sympathetic, raunchy, and fast-paced look at one of the world’s legendary lovers” (Artshub)

A man in historical clothing, including a black cap and dark velvet robe, stands with hands clasped, looking intently ahead, as if performing on stage in a dramatic scene. Two men in historical clothing stand facing each other intensely on stage, one looking at the other with a stern expression. The background is dimly lit with wooden panelling, suggesting a dramatic theatre scene.

LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS (2010)

Jamie teamed up with the dazzling Sharon Millerchip in this classic story from master of comedy Neil Simon, playing ordinary Barney Cashman, a man in the throws of a midlife crisis and exploring the fantasy of an extramarital affair.

“Oxenbould and Millerchip make a memorable pair and Mark Kilmurry [director] has teased the very best out of them” Stage Noise

A woman in a white dress and glasses sits on a floral sofa, raising her arms. Next to her, a man stands with his trousers around his ankles, holding up his arms, looking distressed, and wearing a shirt, tie, and boxer shorts. A man in a blue suit and a woman in a purple dress sit on a floral sofa, facing each other and smiling warmly. The woman holds a glass while resting her arm on the sofa back, and the man has his arms crossed. A woman with blonde hair and a white dress holds a cigarette and gently touches a man’s face as he looks at her, seated on a floral-patterned sofa in a warmly lit room with blinds and patterned wallpaper.

CHAPTER TWO (2005)

In this classic Neil Simon story about finding love for the second time around, Jamie played George’s loyal, meddling brother Leo alongside Brian Meegan, Georgie Parker and Kate Raison.

FULLY COMMITTED (2002)

In Ensemble’s first staging of Becky Mode’s hilarious Broadway smash, Jamie played Sam, a young reservationist working the phones and placating the city’s elite in one of the hottest restaurants in town.

A man wearing a headset and holding a coffee cup sits at a cluttered desk with papers and office supplies. Behind him is a blackboard with colourful writing and diagrams. A small green puppet is visible on the desk. A man wearing a headset and a New York Yankees T-shirt shrugs his shoulders with his arms outstretched while sitting at a cluttered desk, with a large blackboard full of writing behind him. A man in a blue shirt sits at a cluttered desk, making a peace sign with his fingers and looking up with his mouth open. Behind him is a chalkboard with various colourful words and drawings. A man in a kitchen appears to have six arms, multitasking by holding a knife, plates, telephones, a notepad, and a pen while wearing a headset, looking overwhelmed and busy.

Take a peek into the mysterious THE WOMAN IN BLACK rehearsal room and see what ghostly goings-on are lurking in the shadows of this thrilling West End classic…
A man with a beard and moustache smiles whilst wearing a long, oversized dark trench coat over a casual shirt, standing in front of a light-coloured, textured curtain. Two men stand facing each other indoors. The man on the left wears a purple shirt and grey trousers, while the man on the right, taller and with dark hair, wears a dark coat, jeans, and brown boots. White curtain backdrop. A woman with brown hair in a messy bun, wearing a light grey jumper, sits at a table with a notebook and blue mug. She covers her mouth with her hand and looks slightly to the side, appearing surprised or amused. A man with a beard, wearing a purple shirt layered over a grey long-sleeve, sits indoors with his hand thoughtfully touching his chin, looking slightly upward and lost in thought. A man with curly hair and a dark coat looks intently at another man with greying hair, who is seen from behind, in a room with white curtains in the background. Four people sit at a long table in an office, smiling and appearing engaged. Laptops, papers, cups, and office supplies are on the table. Shelves and a noticeboard are visible in the background. A man in a dark coat stands in the foreground, looking slightly to the side with a serious expression. Another man in casual clothes stands blurred in the background inside a brightly lit room with white walls and curtains. An older man with grey hair and glasses, wearing a dark jumper, gestures with both hands while speaking at a table. There are cups, a water bottle, papers, and a bottle of hand sanitiser in front of him. A middle-aged man with a beard and moustache sits at a desk with pens and a laptop, looking to the side. The background features a white curtain, and his expression appears attentive. A group of people in a brightly lit room, some sitting at desks with laptops and papers, whilst two people stand facing each other and gesturing, suggesting a collaborative or rehearsal setting. A man with curly hair and a dark jacket smiles whilst leaning on a large, old brown trunk. He is standing behind a wooden chair, with white curtains in the background. Three people are sitting at a desk with laptops, papers, and office supplies. The person in the middle with glasses and wavy hair looks towards the camera, while the others are focused on their work.
